Things we love about Appleton, WI
Appleton is a community rich in history and personality. It follows that there are so many great ways to get out and enjoy this wonderful city on the Fox River. Here are some of our favorites!
History Museum at the Castle
Want to learn more about Appleton’s history? Just east of downtown Appleton and just West of Lawrence University, lies The History Museum at the Castle. Some recent exhibits included:
- AKA Houdini – a tour of some of Houdini’s most famous tricks that let you experience them as a viewer would have in the 20th century.
- Why McCarthy – an informed historical view of the polarizing political figure who came from Appleton. Whatever your view of Joseph McCarthy, you will appreciate the amount of work that has gone into curating and presenting an unbiased look at his life and career.
- Neon: Darkness Electrified – a look through the history books at neon signs.
We’re always excited to see what new exhibits the History Museum at the Castle is presenting.
Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve
The Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve off of Highway A in Appleton offers 8 miles of trails that are perfect for walking, hiking, jogging, snowshoeing, skiing or just spending a day outdoors. The center is open year-round with special events throughout the year that allow you to see the natural magic at work in the Fox Cities countryside.
Fox River Mall
Maybe a day outdoors isn’t quite in line with the weather Northeast Wisconsin has thrown at you for the day. Well, you’re in luck as neighboring (and pretty much the same city, seriously ask anybody who lives in Appleton) Grand Chute offers the most luxurious and one of the largest shopping centers in Northeast Wisconsin.
The 150+ stores, restaurants and surrounding shopping destinations bring visitors from Northern Wisconsin, Western Wisconsin and even the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. You may need more than a day to see it all.
The Historic Hearthstone House Museum
Located on the bank of the Fox River just half a mile south of downtown Appleton, the Historic Hearthstone House Museum is a 130+ year old house that offers guided tours and is even said to be haunted. The house was the first in Appleton with household electricity, thanks to the hydroelectric Edison system built along the Fox River.
Fans of Victorian history will love the architecture and machinery still present in the house, and kids are sure to enjoy the working hydroelectricity generator model that is as fun as it is educational.
